  • The Wood Store Brighton (Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling Project)
    4.7
Gnd Floor, Oakley Hse, Edward St, Brighton, BN2 0BA, GB

Welcome to The Wood Store, where innovation meets sustainability since 1998. Formerly known as the Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling Project, we pioneered a movement that reimagined waste timber as a precious resource deserving a second life. Protecting the Environment: We collect, recycle, and re-use reclaimed waste wood across East and West Sussex, championing resource conservation for a greener planet. Educating and Promoting Change: Through educational materials and affordable sustainably-produced timber, we inspire a community dedicated to responsible consumption and a sustainable future. Changing Lives and Building Futures: Beyond jobs, we offer work placements, training, qualifications, mentoring, and volunteering opportunities, focusing on empowering those facing challenges in the job market. Join us in weaving a tapestry of change, one reclaimed piece of wood at a time. We operate a delivery service in Sussex. All enquiries/ orders by phone, email, text or WhatsApp Our Impact In 2022, we rescued 686 tonnes of timber from the waste stream. We saved 342 tonnes of C02 from re-entering the atmosphere. We created 16 paid jobs and trained 70 people. Of the 686 tonnes of wood diverted from the waste stream, 155.2 tonnes was pushed up the waste hierarchy into reuse: used by the community for DIY/building projects or as firewood, or made into a whole range of beautiful products from bird boxes to dining tables. And 430.9 tonnes was recycled: either sent for recycling into woodchip, used in the manufacture of particleboard, animal bedding, or as carbon neutral fuel in power stations. With us, everything we collect is reused or recycled - nothing is returned to the waste stream. Reusing wood is 10 times more efficient than harvesting, milling, and transporting virgin wood. Even our collection methodology saves carbon! Our 3.5 tonne collection trucks use less than half the fuel of a skip lorry, greatly reducing CO2 emissions, pollution, and the impact on the road. With every tonne of wood we collect, we are creating work and training opportunities for disadvantaged people - changing lives for the better. We are part of the Community Wood Recycling network. Frequently Asked Questions About Scaffolding Companies

Find answers to common questions about scaffolding companies and hiring scaffolding contractors in the UK.

What are the safety regulations for scaffolding in the UK?

Scaffolding safety is paramount. In the UK, strict regulations govern the erection, use, and dismantling of scaffolding. Key regulations include:
  • Work at Height Regulations 2005: Covers all work at height and outlines the need for risk assessments, competent erectors, and safe equipment.
  • Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM): Applies to construction projects and requires planning for scaffolding safety throughout the project lifecycle.
  • British Standard BS EN 12811: Sets standards for the design, manufacture, and testing of scaffolding components.
  • NASC (National Access & Scaffolding Confederation) Guidance: Provides industry best practices and safety recommendations for scaffolding.
It's crucial to hire a scaffolding company that complies with all relevant regulations and prioritizes worker safety.

What is the weight limit for scaffolding?

The weight limit for scaffolding varies depending on the type of scaffolding, its design, and the materials used. The scaffolding should have a load capacity that safely accommodates the combined weight of:
  • Workers: Consider the number of workers on the scaffolding at any given time.
  • Materials: Include the weight of building materials, tools, and equipment being used on the platform.
  • Environmental Factors: Factor in potential loads from wind or snow, especially for taller scaffolding structures.
The scaffolding tag should clearly indicate its maximum load capacity. Never exceed this limit, and consult with a qualified engineer if you have any doubts about the scaffolding's structural integrity.

What questions should I ask a scaffolding company before hiring them?

Before hiring a scaffolding company, gather essential information by asking these questions:
  • Experience: 'How long have you been in business, and what experience do you have with projects like mine?'
  • Licensing and Insurance: 'Are you fully licensed and insured, and can I see proof of coverage?'
  • Safety Record: 'What are your safety procedures, and how do you ensure worker safety on the job site?'
  • References: 'Can you provide references from previous clients?'
  • Quotes and Costs: 'Can you provide a detailed quote that outlines all costs, including materials, labor, and any additional services?'
  • Project Timeline: 'What is the estimated timeframe for scaffolding erection and dismantling?'
  • Communication: 'How will you communicate with me throughout the project?'
These questions help you evaluate their expertise, professionalism, and suitability for your needs.

Do I need a permit for scaffolding in the UK?

Whether or not you need a permit for scaffolding in the UK depends on various factors, including the size and location of the scaffolding. In general, permits are often required for scaffolding that:
  • Encroaches onto public property (sidewalks, roads): Permits are usually needed from the local council or highway authority.
  • Exceeds a certain height: Scaffolding above a specified height often requires a permit.
  • Is erected in a conservation area or near a listed building: Special considerations and permits may apply.
It's essential to consult with your local planning authority and the scaffolding company to determine if a permit is necessary for your project.
